When SheWho moves
the Earth will turn over
Welcome to SheWho, Philadelphia’s feminist, women’s vocal ensemble. Founded by Karen Escovitz (aka Otter) in September, 2000, SheWho has performed across the region and the U.S., and released one (so far!) recording, “The Earth Will Turn Over.”
The women of SheWho come from many different backgrounds, professions, and spiritualities, and we celebrate our diversity through our intentional vocal community. While Otter is the group’s leader and driving force, our decisions about repertoire and performances are made collectively. We strive to bring to our singing the richness of our diverse backgrounds, and we consciously choose to also represent the experiences and longings of women different from ourselves.
We take our name from the Goddess-envisioned-in-women’s-lives created by Judy Grahn in the early 1970’s. As the group was forming, we asked Judy for permission to use the name, and received her blessing. That same year, Otter created a musical setting/vocal arrangement of one of the SheWho poems, creating an instant classic.
On our website you’ll find more about our mission, our history, our members and our projects. You can buy our CD, “The Earth Will Turn Over,” as a CD, an MP3 albumn, or as individual tracks, at CDBaby/SheWho. Please contact us with any questions, or for information about bringing SheWho to your community.
